Getting Started with Play Elements
Custom Nature Playscapes
While many families and schools begin with a few play elements, some spaces call for a more integrated design. In these cases, Natural Wonders can create custom playscapes that combine several of our pre-existing elements with additional features designed specifically for the space. Projects might include climbing and balance features, digging areas, pathways, gathering spaces, sensory gardens, or hidden forts for imaginative play.
Most custom playscape projects fall in the range of $3,000 – $10,000+, depending on the size of the space, number of features, and site preparation involved. If you’re imagining something more tailored to your yard, school, or gathering space, I’d love to explore ideas with you.

Hi, I’m Katie Colgan, the creator of Natural Wonders Playscapes and a mom of a preschooler here in Louisville, Colorado.
The idea for this work started years ago when my wife and I were expecting our son. Before becoming a parent, I spent many years working as a nanny, visiting countless playgrounds. The ones that stood out — and the ones kids were naturally drawn to — were the simplest: tree stumps to climb, sand to dig in, water to splash, and plants to explore. I saw this especially in Waldorf preschools and other nature-based environments.
What I noticed was that kids often spent more time inventing games with sticks, rocks, sand, and water than they did on big plastic play structures.
That realization led me to explore nature-based playscape design and start creating simple outdoor elements families can add to their yards — pieces that invite hours of imaginative play while blending beautifully into the landscape.
